Portrayed women are workers of an argan oil cooperative in Essaouira region in southwestern Morocco. They extract oil from argan nuts, using traditional methods, to produce high quality products used for cosmetic and culinary purposes. Argan oil is amongst the rarest oils in the world. By selling it local women support themselves as well as local community. This helps them to rise their social status in patriarchal society, reduce illiteracy amongst women, provide them with education and gain self-confidence. Argan oil cooperatives are becoming more popular in Morocco as they create more work opportunities to local women and help to preserve endemic argan trees, listed in UNESCO Biosphere reserve.
